The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
