The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
