Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Medication
An underground market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users administering products of uncertain source.
Some professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Platform Reaction and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the service has removed violative material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at residence.
After moments of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Information and Pricing
Inside these groups, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Actions
A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
